Bolaji Idowu, the Lead Pastor of Harvesters International Christian Centre (HICC), has stirred widespread conversation online following a viral video in which he announced a new financial support initiative for unemployed church workers.
The development has drawn praise, criticism, and deeper conversations about unemployment, welfare, and the role of religious institutions in Nigeria.
In the video, Pastor Idowu revealed that active members of the church who are currently without jobs would receive a monthly stipend of ₦50,000 for three months. According to him, the initiative is designed to provide temporary financial relief while beneficiaries actively search for new employment.
The pastor explained that the program is strictly for committed church workers who find themselves between jobs. He emphasized that once members register for the initiative, there would be no screening or interrogation, stressing that the church is operating on trust, compassion, and faith rather than suspicion.
Pastor Idowu, who came under intense public scrutiny in 2024 and was previously linked to a viral controversy involving singer Tiwa Savage, clarified that the decision was not motivated by public opinion or image management. Instead, he said it reflects the church’s responsibility to care for its members during difficult seasons.
The announcement has since sparked mixed reactions across social media platforms. Many Nigerians applauded the initiative, describing it as progressive and humane, especially in a country where unemployment and underemployment continue to rise. Some users compared the move to social welfare systems in Western countries, noting that Nigeria lacks similar government-backed safety nets.
However, others questioned why religious bodies should bear responsibilities they believe belong to the government. A few skeptics also raised concerns about the pastor’s intentions, suggesting the initiative could be aimed at public validation. Another segment of commentators proposed that beneficiaries should remain actively involved in church duties or skill-building programs during the three-month period.
Despite the divided opinions, the viral video has reignited conversations around youth unemployment, social security, and how faith-based organizations can complement government efforts in addressing economic hardship.
