Football legend Cristiano Ronaldo has confirmed that the 2026 FIFA World Cup will mark the end of his remarkable international career.

The Portuguese superstar made the announcement on Tuesday while speaking via video link at a Saudi forum, signaling that the tournament would serve as his final appearance on football’s biggest stage.

“Definitely, yes,” Ronaldo said when asked if the 2026 World Cup would be his last. “I’m gonna be 41 years old and I think it will be the moment.”

The Al Nassr forward also disclosed that he plans to retire from professional football in “one or two years,” marking the close of an extraordinary journey that has spanned more than two decades.

With over 950 career goals for both club and country, the 40-year-old forward has already cemented his place among the greatest players in football history.

His dedication, longevity, and relentless drive have earned him five Ballon d’Or titles, multiple UEFA Champions League crowns, and domestic league triumphs in England, Spain, and Italy.

Ronaldo, who began his professional career at Sporting Lisbon before rising to global fame at Manchester United, Real Madrid, and Juventus, joined Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr in 2023.

His move to the Middle East opened the door for several other top players to join the Saudi Pro League, helping elevate the competition’s global profile.

Reflecting on his career and future, Ronaldo said his decision to step away from the game was driven by self-awareness and respect for the sport.

“Let’s be honest, when I mean soon, it’s probably one or two years I’ll still be at the game,” he explained. “I’ve achieved so much, and I want to finish strong.”

The 2026 World Cup, set to be hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, could be Ronaldo’s sixth appearance in the tournament.

His closest attempt at lifting the trophy came in 2006 when Portugal reached the semi-finals but lost to France. Despite his illustrious international record, the World Cup remains the only major title missing from his collection.

Portugal, led by coach Roberto Martínez, have yet to officially qualify for the tournament but are on track to do so. They can secure their spot with a win against Ireland on Thursday, which would keep Ronaldo’s dream of one final World Cup appearance alive.

Throughout his career, Ronaldo has redefined what it means to be a professional athlete  his commitment to fitness, discipline, and excellence continues to inspire millions of fans worldwide.

Even at 40, his performances for Al Nassr in the Saudi Pro League demonstrate that he remains a competitive force.

As his illustrious career nears its end, the football world prepares to bid farewell to one of its most iconic figures. Ronaldo’s legacy built on records, passion, and unmatched dedication — will remain an enduring chapter in the history of the sport.
