Mrs. Mariam AbdulLateef, a housewife, on Wednesday, prayed an Ilorin Area Court to dissolve her marriage to her husband, AbdulLateef Tahjudeen, citing a lack of intimacy.
Mariam, who resides at No. 144, Cemetery Road, Irewolede Area, Ilorin, told the court that she married her husband in 2016 in accordance with Islamic law. The union is blessed with a seven-year-old child.
She lamented that Tahjudeen stopped fulfilling his marital responsibilities about seven years ago and abandoned their matrimonial bed after the birth of their daughter.
“He does not even sleep in the same room or touch me. Anytime I ask for his attention, he tells me to leave his house whenever I am tired of the marriage,” she said.
Mariam pleaded with the court to dissolve the marriage to enable her to remarry.
“My husband has been tormenting me with accusations of having extramarital affairs, yet he does not touch me. This is affecting my state of mind,” she added.
In response, the husband told the court that he had been battling health challenges, which had impacted his ability to satisfy his wife.
He stated that he was not willing to divorce her, adding that he still loves her dearly and appreciates her patience and perseverance.
The presiding judge, Mr. Hammad Ajumonbi, noted that intimacy is crucial in marriage and should not be overlooked.
Ajumonbi advised the wife to exercise more patience and encouraged the husband to resolve the issue amicably.
The judge adjourned the case to February 20 for a report on the settlement.
