According to Punch Newspaper, a heated altercation at the Faculty of Arts, Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, turned chaotic when a yet-to-be-identified female student bit a lecturer, Dr. Chukwudi Michael, during a disagreement over a TikTok video. The incident, which unfolded within the faculty corridor, has sparked reactions from students and faculty members, raising concerns about student conduct on campus.
Eyewitnesses reported that the student was filming a dance video when Dr. Michael attempted to pass by. The lecturer tapped her shoulder, saying, “Excuse me.” However, this seemingly minor interaction took an unexpected turn. The student reacted angrily, exclaiming, “Can you imagine how he just hit me?” This reaction escalated tensions, drawing the attention of bystanders who watched as the situation intensified.
As the dispute escalated, the student aggressively grabbed the lecturer’s clothing, prompting an intervention from onlookers. Despite attempts to diffuse the situation, the confrontation continued, leading to a physical struggle. Reports indicate that Dr. Michael, upon realizing the student was making a TikTok video, grew concerned that he might have appeared in the footage. In response, he allegedly reached for her phone, requesting that the video be deleted.
According to an official statement from the university’s spokesperson, Emmanuel Chukwurah, an investigation into the matter is currently underway. “Yes, there was an incident like that. Investigations are ongoing, and the school will make its position known once we conclude our findings,” Chukwurah stated. The university is expected to take necessary disciplinary action based on the outcome of the inquiry.
Further details suggest that the lecturer overheard the student making derogatory remarks about him after he walked past. This prompted him to return and confront her, leading to the demand for the video’s deletion. However, instead of complying, the student reportedly responded with physical aggression, culminating in her biting Dr. Michael on both arms. The severity of his injuries remains unclear, but the incident has sparked discussions on the growing trend of social media activities interfering with academic environments.
The altercation has since generated mixed reactions from students and staff. Some argue that lecturers should be more accommodating of students’ social media activities, while others stress the importance of discipline and respect within the university setting. The university administration has assured the public that appropriate measures will be taken to address the matter and prevent future occurrences of similar incidents.
