As reported by The Punch, a devastating tragedy unfolded in Okija, Anambra State, on Saturday when a stampede at a charitable event led to the deaths of at least 22 individuals. The incident left the entire community in shock and mourning. Among the grieving families is Uchenna Nwaudo, a man who heartbreakingly shared that he had advised his wife against attending the event—advice she ultimately chose to ignore.
The unfortunate event occurred at the Obijackson Centre in the Amanranta area of Okija, where a large crowd had gathered to receive palliatives, including 25kg bags of rice, bottles of vegetable oil, and cash distributions. The victims, mainly women, children, and the elderly, were crushed in a desperate attempt to gain access through the overcrowded entrance.
Recounting the heartbreaking loss, Nwaudo, a resident of Umuohi village in Okija, spoke about the circumstances that led to the tragedy.
“On that day, I pleaded with my wife to remain at home,” he shared, his voice filled with pain. “Our baby was unwell, and I thought it was better for her to stay back and care for him rather than risk the chaos at such a large gathering. I was worried about her safety, knowing how these events can spiral out of control.”
Nwaudo continued, “I was at my business place at Ihiala Junction when I received a call to rush to Amanranta, the venue of the palliative distribution. They told me there had been a heavy stampede, my wife was trampled upon, and she had just slumped on the floor. I was shocked because I had already warned her not to attend.”
He added, “When I got there, to my surprise, I met her lifeless body, and my baby was still strapped to her back while everywhere was rowdy, with people scampering to safety. I looked and observed that the baby was still alive. What I did was remove the baby from her back and leave the scene.”
