I Arrested My Husband and His Brother for Stealing from Me, Am I a Bad Person?

I am a young lady, 28 years old, married with two kids. I have always been a business-minded person. There’s absolutely nothing I didn’t sell in school just to make ends meet. I am from a polygamous home, so after tuition fees, my papa no send you again. The three of us from my mom had to strive to get things for ourselves.

I didn’t want to be like my mom, who became a full housewife and ended up being broke. When I was seven, in Kano, I invested in a lot of gold. I have 15 full-set pairs. I even had to buy a safe for it, which I naturally carried to my husband’s house.

When I had my first baby, it was so hard, but God took control. Three years later, I was placed on bed rest for two months. My business was at a standstill, and my sister’s girls chopped what they could from it. So I brought the remaining home and locked it in my safe. I had over four million Naira in profit saved from sales and over 10 million Naira in capital, which I fixed so I couldn’t touch it.

Now, the reason I am here is because my husband has been sending his brother to steal my gold and sell it so they could make money. I didn’t know this until last week.

I was about to go to the market and had already said goodbye, but I forgot my second phone. I entered the house and went straight to my room. Then I felt like using the toilet. I was inside when his brother came to do his stealing, and I recorded everything. As he was closing the safe, I shouted, and he was shocked.

It took hours before he confessed that it was my husband who sent him. I didn’t argue. I told him to call my husband. When my husband came back home, he wanted to be doing Agidi (acting stubborn). That was how I called the police to arrest both of them.

This is the same man who stopped me from working after childbirth, saying his kids had to be taken care of. I have been supporting the house without complaining. When he buys foodstuff, I buy gas and fuel for the generator. Sometimes, I even cook soup worth 100K+ without complaining or asking him for anything.

But what did he do to me? From 15 pairs of gold, I have only two left! Imagine my father’s shock when my useless mother-in-law, who never liked me, said, So what? She claimed that whatever I have belongs to my husband and that only a selfish and bad woman would be angry that her husband “found a means to an end.”

Everyone in his family is calling me a bad woman and pressuring me, but my mom said I should not agree. Please, am I a bad person? If he was low on cash, what was so bad about talking to me about it? Instead, he started stealing! I hate stealing with all my being.

I don’t know what will happen to the marriage. He couldn’t even do the dirty work himself, so he planted his younger brother in the house to do it for him. And this man doesn’t spend reasonably! Even my Monshine earrings, necklace, and certificate—I can’t find them.

He and his brother have been in the police station since Friday, and the police are already calling me to ask what to do. Imagine this man threatening me, saying I must not be at home when he returns. He said that if I had the guts to arrest him and make him sleep in police custody, he would show me “the kind of man he is.”

He even sent his mother to come and take the kids. I banged the door on her. Was I not the one who paid 1 million out of 1.7 million for our rent?

Please, pause this. These people want to cheat me! Where was he when I was drinking garri, saving, and investing in gold?

Would you believe that I just found out he is jobless? He’s like all these jobless people calling themselves agents, claiming they are realtors! Ha! I thought he had a business page and was closing deals, but he doesn’t even have a real job. Gbogbo!
