FG Sets Up Committee for 2025 Democracy Day Celebration

The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially begun preparations for the 2025 Democracy Day celebration by inaugurating a high-level planning committee.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, was appointed as chairman of the committee. However, he was represented at the committee’s inauguration by the Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Senator Atiku Bagudu.

Committee’s Mandate: Promote Democratic Values

Speaking at the inauguration, Bagudu emphasized that Democracy Day is not just a public holiday but an opportunity for the government to:

  • Showcase its achievements,

  • Promote good governance, and

  • Reaffirm its commitment to democratic ideals.

He urged committee members to align all planned activities with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which emphasizes transparency, unity, and national development.

Key Events Scheduled

The committee has outlined a series of activities leading up to and culminating on Thursday, June 12th, Nigeria’s official Democracy Day:

  • Friday, June 6: World Press Briefing and Juma’at Service

  • Sunday, June 8: Church Service

  • Tuesday, June 9: Youth Programme

  • Wednesday, June 11: Public Lecture

  • Thursday, June 12 (Grand Finale): Presidential Broadcast and National Parade

High-Level Committee Members

The Democracy Day Committee features several prominent figures across government and security agencies, including:

  • Ministers of Finance, Information, Foreign Affairs, Interior, and the FCT

  • The Inspector-General of Police

  • The Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS)

  • The Commander of the Guards Brigade

  • Key Permanent Secretaries

  • Engr. Nadungu Gagare, who will serve as committee secretary
