President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has strongly denied allegations that his administration directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to halt the registration of new political parties in Nigeria.
Speaking during a joint session of the National Assembly on Democracy Day, Thursday, June 13, 2025, the President addressed recent claims suggesting efforts by his government to suppress the formation of new parties.
“I have never stopped the registration of any political party,” Tinubu said firmly, reaffirming his commitment to upholding democratic principles and INEC’s independence.
The comment comes amid growing concerns and opposition claims that the federal government is attempting to build a one-party system under the All Progressives Congress (APC). However, Tinubu dismissed the accusations, stating that APC’s dominance is the result of its broad public appeal, not suppression of rival groups.
“I would not help opposition political parties to put their houses in order. It is indeed a pleasure to watch your houses in disarray,” the President added, drawing reactions from across the political spectrum.
While emphasizing his party’s readiness to welcome new members, Tinubu made it clear that APC remains open to political expansion and engagement.
“You are all welcome to the progressives forum,” he stated, referencing the recent defections of opposition members from Delta and Akwa Ibom States to the APC. “To reject those seeking to join us would amount to political malpractice.”
The President’s statements come at a time when Nigeria’s political landscape is experiencing increased realignments, defections, and debates over electoral reforms. His remarks are expected to intensify discussions around political inclusion, freedom of association, and the independence of electoral institutions.
