Nigeria’s main opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), is once again making headlines — not for electoral victories, but for what many are calling the worst internal crisis in its history.
According to NewsVista reports, political commentator and newspaper columnist, Majeed Dahiru, delivered a brutal but honest diagnosis on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily. In his words, the PDP is “like a sick man suffering from multiple organ failure”, and may be entering its “dying phase.”
The statement, made during a live broadcast on June 26, 2025, reflects growing concern over the party’s mounting internal divisions and legal chaos.
At the heart of the crisis are leadership tussles, court cases, and bitter infighting, with some party stakeholders insisting that court rulings regarding the party secretaryship be obeyed — or risk total collapse.
“What we are witnessing is probably the dying phase of the party,” Dahiru warned, noting that unless urgent reforms are made, the PDP could fade into political irrelevance.
This turmoil comes just two years after the party’s defeat in the 2023 presidential election, and analysts say the wounds from that loss remain wide open.
Disunity, power struggles, and lack of clear direction are reportedly tearing the party apart, with accusations flying between different factions — each blaming the other for sabotaging internal peace.
“The PDP is at a critical juncture, and without swift action, it risks irrelevance,” Dahiru added.
Observers say this crisis is more than a temporary setback — it’s a test of survival. Unlike in the past, when the party bounced back through coalitions and rebranding, the current conflict appears too deep and too personal, with no clear path forward.
What’s at stake?
The PDP’s reputation, its support base, and its position as Nigeria’s leading opposition party.
With the 2027 general elections drawing closer, the question remains: Can the PDP pull itself together, or are we watching the slow death of a once-dominant political force?
