Why Ronaldo Missed Diogo Jota’s Funeral – Family Breaks Silence Amid Fans’ Reactions
According to a NewsVista report, Cristiano Ronaldo’s sister has spoken out following the football icon’s absence at the emotional funeral of Diogo Jota and his brother, André Silva, who tragically died in a car crash on July 3.
The brothers lost their lives when their Lamborghini crashed and caught fire in Zamora, Spain. Their funeral took place two days later in their hometown of Gondomar and was attended by teammates from Liverpool and the Portuguese national team. However, Ronaldo’s absence sparked online speculation and criticism.
Now, his sister, Katia Aveiro, has revealed the heartbreaking reason behind the decision. Taking to Instagram, she explained that her brother wanted to avoid turning a moment of mourning into a media frenzy. “When our father passed away, we couldn’t even leave the chapel due to the cameras and crowds. Imagine what it would be like now with Cristiano’s level of attention,” she said.
Katia also warned critics to stop focusing on Ronaldo and instead show support to the Jota family. “It is shameful that people are emphasising an absence instead of honouring the pain of a family destroyed by the loss of two sons,” she wrote.
Ronaldo’s absence was reportedly also linked to medical advice, as the star was recovering from surgery and had been told not to fly. He was due to travel by ferry to England for pre-season training.
In a show of respect, Liverpool FC delayed the start of their pre-season training, with manager Arne Slot and several teammates present at the funeral.
As fans mourn the loss of a beloved football star, the message from Ronaldo’s camp is clear: sometimes, silence and privacy are the deepest forms of respect.
