According to our reporter, medical experts have raised serious concern over the rising cases of brain damage linked to heavy drinking and smoking, warning that these habits can cause memory loss, brain shrinkage, and increase the risk of dementia.
Dr. Abass Ajayi, a Neurosurgery Senior Registrar at Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Zaria, explained that alcohol metabolism produces toxic substances that destroy neurons — the brain cells responsible for memory and coordination.
“Heavy drinking and smoking release harmful chemicals that damage brain structures and make the brain age faster,” Dr. Ajayi said. He added that brain cells do not regenerate once destroyed, making the damage permanent.
Experts also revealed that excessive alcohol use can lead to vitamin B1 deficiency, which may cause serious neurological disorders like Wernicke’s encephalopathy and Korsakoff’s psychosis — both known to cause confusion and severe memory loss.
Nutritionist Olusola Malomo advised Nigerians to eat more nuts, fruits, vegetables, and fish rich in omega-3 fatty acids to protect brain health and slow down ageing.
They emphasized that avoiding smoking, limiting alcohol, regular exercise, and engaging in brain-stimulating activities like reading or puzzles can help preserve mental sharpness and prevent irreversible brain damage.
