Creation of Anioma State, Kanu’s Release Will Restore Peace in South-East — Sen Nwoko

Senator Ned Nwoko has stirred fresh debate after declaring that peace will only return to the South-East when the Federal Government creates Anioma State and releases IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

According to our reporter, the Delta North lawmaker made this statement during a televised interview, stressing that decades of marginalisation have fueled the region’s unrest and mistrust toward the government.

“The problem in the South-East is rooted in perceived injustice,” Nwoko said. “Once you create a new state to make the zone six, and release Nnamdi Kanu, peace will naturally return.”

He described Kanu’s continued detention as unnecessary and unfair, insisting that his freedom would promote reconciliation and national unity.

Nwoko, who has been championing the creation of Anioma State from Delta, revealed that the National Assembly’s joint committee on constitutional review has already approved adding a new state to the South-East. He expressed confidence that Anioma would be chosen, citing strong support during the recent public hearing in Enugu.

He also hinted that President Bola Tinubu might back the idea, calling it “one of the best gifts” the president could offer the Igbo people.

This development comes as Nnamdi Kanu remains in DSS custody since 2021, facing terrorism-related charges at the Federal High Court in Abuja — a case that continues to divide opinions across the country.
