According to our latest report, U.S. Senator Ted Cruz has introduced a bill seeking to impose sanctions on Nigerian officials and religious leaders who promote or enforce Sharia and blasphemy laws, following President Donald Trump’s recent designation of Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern (CPC).”
The bill, as reported by Premium Times, comes just 24 hours after Trump’s declaration, which alleged that Christians in Nigeria face severe persecution. Senator Cruz, in a statement released via his official website, commended Trump’s move and vowed to ensure that Congress swiftly enforces sanctions aimed at protecting victims of religious intolerance.
According to Cruz, the legislation is not intended to target any religion or ethnic group but to hold accountable those who use religious laws to justify violence or human rights abuses. He expressed concern over recurring reports of mob killings and stoning incidents in northern states such as Sokoto, Kano, and Kaduna, where individuals accused of blasphemy have been brutally executed.
While some northern leaders have criticized the U.S. decision as politically motivated, Cruz maintained that his stance is based on verified human rights violations and not misinformation.
