According to our report, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has secured a significant political victory after the Federal High Court in Abuja stopped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from holding its planned national convention in Ibadan, Oyo State, scheduled for November 15–16, 2025.
Justice James Omotosho issued the ruling following a lawsuit filed by Austin Nwachukwu, Amah Abraham Nnanna, and Turnah Alabh George, who accused the PDP of violating its own constitution, the 1999 Constitution, and INEC regulations.
The plaintiffs claimed that the party failed to conduct proper state congresses in several states and neglected to notify INEC 21 days before the convention — a mandatory requirement. They also argued that key documents were improperly signed by only the acting national chairman, Umar Iliya Damagum, without the co-signature of the national secretary.
In his ruling, Justice Omotosho ordered the PDP to correct these procedural lapses before holding any national convention, stating that the case could not be dismissed as an internal party affair since it concerned compliance with electoral laws. INEC was also barred from monitoring or recognising any activity related to the suspended convention.
Wike, who has had long-standing political tensions with PDP governors such as Seyi Makinde and Bala Mohammed, reportedly hailed the ruling as a victory against what he described as “arrogance and impunity.”
Party insiders told reporters that the judgment is a major blow to Makinde, who was set to host the event, and to Damagum’s leadership, which has faced growing criticism.
Meanwhile, the PDP leadership has condemned the verdict, labelling it a “judicial attack on internal democracy” and confirming plans to appeal the decision.
The development has intensified divisions within the opposition party and raised fresh concerns over its stability and unity ahead of the 2027 general elections.
