According to our report, former Kaduna Central Senator Shehu Sani has sharply rebuked U.S. President Donald Trump’s designation of Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern”, calling the move unfounded, misleading, and divisive.
Speaking on his verified Facebook account, Sani argued that there is no Christian genocide in Nigeria and criticized Trump’s statement as relying on “false, misleading, and mischievous narratives” aimed at creating religious tension among Nigerians.
He stressed that terrorism and banditry over the past fifteen years have impacted people of all faiths, noting that Muslims have actually suffered more casualties, as many attacks occur in predominantly Muslim regions. Extremist groups, he added, target both mosques and churches, attack religious leaders of all faiths, and kidnap Christians and Muslims alike, making claims of targeted persecution inaccurate.
Sani also condemned a U.S. Senate bill sponsored by Ted Cruz, which seeks to sanction individuals enforcing Sharia and blasphemy laws in Nigeria. He described the legislation as “a direct and unjust attack on the legal and religious principles of Muslims in Nigeria,” reaffirming that the country must manage its own governance and religious affairs without foreign interference.
“Nigeria, as a sovereign nation, has the right to determine its legal and religious systems. No external power should dictate how we govern ourselves,” Sani stated.
He called on the U.S. and other international actors to focus on supporting Nigeria’s fight against terrorism rather than issuing declarations that could worsen divisions. Sani also warned that Nigerians spreading misinformation abroad for personal or political gain could tarnish the country’s reputation.
Despite the external pressures, he concluded on a positive note, asserting that Nigeria will overcome its security challenges through unity and accurate understanding of its complex realities.
