FG Must Do Everything Humanly Possible to Avoid The Invocation of Global Magnitsky Act – Showunmi

PDP chieftain Otunba Segun Showunmi has urged the Federal Government to take urgent action to prevent Nigeria from being subjected to sanctions under the Global Magnitsky Act.

In a statement on X (formerly Twitter) on November 1, 2025, Showunmi warned that such sanctions could have severe consequences for both the nation and individuals in government. He highlighted that the combination of a Country of Particular Concern (CPC) designation under the U.S. International Religious Freedom Act and the Global Magnitsky Act could be disastrous, describing those downplaying it as “uninformed pretenders.”

He explained the distinction: CPC designation affects the nation broadly, causing diplomatic and economic challenges, while the Magnitsky Act targets individual officials accused of human rights abuses or corruption, imposing asset freezes, travel bans, and other penalties.

Showunmi stressed that the government must ensure accountability, respect for human rights, and adherence to the rule of law to avoid reputational damage and international isolation, emphasizing that prevention is far better than the fallout of sanctions.
