President Tinubu Rebuts Trump’s “Country of Particular Concern” Label

According to our report, President Bola Tinubu has strongly rejected former U.S. President Donald Trump’s designation of Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern” over alleged persecution of Christians, reaffirming that the nation’s secular constitution guarantees religious freedom for all.

Through Special Adviser Ajuri Ngelale, Tinubu stated, “Nigeria remains a secular state guided by equality and mutual respect. Our Constitution protects freedom of thought, conscience, and religion without discrimination.”

Trump cited over 7,000 Christian deaths in 2025 and labeled Christianity under “existential threat,” reviving a classification removed in 2021 due to improvements. Ngelale clarified that much of the violence arises from criminal, economic, and ethnic conflicts—mischaracterized as religious—such as farmer-herder clashes in the Middle Belt.

Tinubu called for interfaith unity and stronger protection for worship sites, defending Nigeria’s sovereignty while mitigating potential sanctions risks.
