Kaduna-based Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has said that bandits attacking communities in Nigeria often act out of revenge and do not strike without reason.
Speaking on TrustTV, Gumi explained that unlike groups such as IPOB, these attackers can be engaged through dialogue. “If you call them for peace, they will come. They are on a revenge mission,” he said, stressing that understanding their motives is key to reducing violence.
The cleric’s comments come amid growing insecurity in northwest Nigeria, where banditry has caused deaths, kidnappings, and forced many farmers to abandon their fields. While the government has held peace talks and security forces continue operations, attacks persist.

Gumi urged that both national and international stakeholders consider negotiation alongside security measures, arguing that dialogue could help restore calm in affected communities.
