Pastor W.F. Kumuyi, General Superintendent of Deeper Christian Life Ministry, has urged Christian parents and church marriage committees to avoid unnecessarily delaying the marriages of young men and women, warning that hesitation could weaken families and the church.
In a recent sermon streamed on YouTube, Pastor Kumuyi cited Jeremiah 29:6 to highlight the importance of marriage and childbearing: “Take ye wives and beget children, sons and daughters; and take wives for your sons, and give your daughters to husbands that they may bear. Your will increase, you will not diminish.” He emphasized that obedience to God’s commands is essential for family growth and the strength of the Christian community.
The cleric expressed concern that some parents place too much emphasis on tribe, social background, or financial resources when approving marriage proposals. “The child is turning 26, 27, 32, 34… and when someone comes to ask for the hand of the daughter, they keep saying no,” he explained. He warned that overly cautious approaches, often reinforced by church marriage committees, restrict opportunities for young Christians to marry and start families.
Pastor Kumuyi contrasted this with practices in other religious communities, where polygamy and early marriage contribute to population growth and family continuity. “Other religious people are marrying four, five, even seven wives and bearing children, populating the nation, while some Christian denominations are restricting marriages because of fear and lack of faith,” he said.
He encouraged parents and church leaders to act with faith, release their children for marriage when ready, and trust God for childbearing. “Whatever is holding back your family from increasing, release it. The way is open. Childbearing will start in your families, in Jesus’ name,” he affirmed.
