President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has stated his position on the ongoing trial of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader Nnamdi Kanu, emphasizing respect for the rule of law and judicial independence.
Speaking through Mrs. Chioma Wesley, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Community Engagement (South-East), the Presidency confirmed that President Tinubu will not take any action that could influence the outcome of the case. “Mr. President will not take any step that may affect the independence of the judiciary. The courts must be allowed to deliver justice fairly and without pressure,” Mrs. Wesley said.
Nnamdi Kanu, in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since 2021, faces charges including treasonable felony and terrorism. The Federal High Court in Abuja, presided over by Justice Binta Nyako, is scheduled to deliver a major ruling on November 20, 2025.
Mrs. Wesley also highlighted government efforts to promote peace and unity in the South-East, engaging traditional rulers, youth groups, and community leaders through the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda. Similar initiatives are ongoing across other regions, focusing on education, skills training, healthcare, and economic empowerment.
Despite repeated calls from South-East leaders for Kanu’s release, the Presidency maintains that the matter remains a judicial process that must follow legal procedures. As the court date approaches, Nigerians are watching closely, but the Federal Government insists justice will take its full course under the law.
