Until Sheikh Gumi Changes That Pattern Of Behavior, He Cannot Be My Friend— Asari Dokubo

Prominent Kalabari leader Asari Dokubo has publicly distanced himself from Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, accusing the cleric of repeatedly defending bandits and terrorists. Dokubo said he will no longer consider Gumi a friend unless the cleric changes what he called a troubling pattern of statements that appear to sympathize with violent groups.

In a video shared on Facebook, Dokubo criticised Gumi’s public comments and urged the cleric to stop defending individuals involved in violent crime. Dokubo told viewers that, in his view, continued public sympathy for suspected criminals undermines efforts to restore peace and emboldens those behind persistent attacks across parts of the country. “Until Sheikh Gumi changes that pattern of behavior, he cannot be my friend,” Dokubo said.

The Kalabari leader also expressed firm support for decisive action against insecurity. He said he backs robust measures—within the law—to confront the growing threat of banditry and violent crime, and warned that excuses for criminality must stop. Dokubo’s remarks come amid heightened national debate over how best to tackle kidnappings, banditry and terrorism without inflaming tensions.

Observers say Dokubo’s comments underscore broader public frustration with persistent attacks and the mixed messages that sometimes follow public appeals or negotiations with armed groups. Critics of inflammatory rhetoric on both sides warn that careful language and respect for the rule of law are essential to long-term peace and justice.
