FG: You can’t take that question of sovereignty too far because yours has been undermined– Hashim

Political analyst and former presidential candidate, Dr. Gbenga Hashim, has weighed in on the debate surrounding Nigeria’s sovereignty amid growing international interest in the country’s security situation.

Speaking during an interview on Trust TV, Hashim explained that recent discussions about foreign involvement — particularly from the United States — stem not only from humanitarian concerns but also from political pressures within America itself. He noted that former U.S. President Donald Trump’s reported interest in Nigeria’s crisis reflects the influence of domestic political groups in his country.

Dr. Hashim emphasized that calls for international intervention should not be viewed strictly as threats to Nigeria’s independence. He argued that the nation’s sovereignty has already been weakened by internal insecurity and the inability of authorities to fully protect all regions from armed violence.

“You can’t take that question of sovereignty too far now because your sovereignty has been undermined anyway,” he said, adding that insecurity and ungoverned spaces have eroded the government’s control in several areas.

According to him, Nigeria must adopt a balanced approach — engaging constructively with global partners to enhance security while safeguarding national interests. He noted that diplomatic cooperation, when managed properly, could strengthen local capacity through intelligence sharing and technical support.

Hashim further urged the federal government to recognize that rejecting all external assistance could be counterproductive. Instead, he called for proactive diplomacy that aligns foreign collaboration with Nigeria’s long-term stability goals.
