At least six d!e in crush after thousands showed up for Ghana military recruitment

At least six people have reportedly died during a crowd crush at a Ghana Armed Forces recruitment event held at El Wak Stadium in Accra.

According to BBC, the tragic incident occurred on Tuesday, November 11, 2025, as thousands of Ghanaian youths queued overnight for the 2025 recruitment screening. An unexpected surge of applicants breached security protocols and rushed through the gates, triggering the crush, the military confirmed.

Army spokesperson Capt. Veronica Adzo Arhin stated that the incident happened before the event’s scheduled start at 06:20 GMT. In addition to the fatalities, 22 people were injured, five of whom remain in critical condition. Viral footage from the scene shows long queues and chaotic scenes outside the stadium.

Ghana’s youth unemployment rate is estimated at 32%, according to recent government data, and military recruitment events often draw large crowds, occasionally resulting in such dangerous situations. The recruitment deadline had been extended by a week to accommodate applicants who faced difficulties in completing their applications.
