“The night Reverend Victor, preached in my church, the next day he was burnt to death” —Rev. Hayab

Reverend Joseph Hayab, Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) for the 19 Northern states and the Federal Capital Territory, has recounted the harrowing killing of Reverend Victor Ney, a retired Nigerian Army soldier turned Baptist pastor. The account was shared on News Central TV on November 13, 2025.

Rev. Hayab described how Reverend Ney was murdered in the aftermath of a church service: “The night Reverend Victor preached in my church, the next day he was burnt to death.” He noted that Ney, a man of tall stature who had dedicated years to military service before entering the ministry, became a tragic victim of regional violence.

The cleric recalled the difficulty in identifying Ney’s charred remains, which were eventually recognized by a personal item: his son identified the pastor’s shoes near the small body. Rev. Hayab said the horrific scene left a lasting impact on the community, likening the remains of the tall former soldier to that of an infant.

“This is just one of many tragic stories arising from the incessant violence in the North,” Rev. Hayab concluded, acknowledging the grief and trauma endured by affected families.
