“I Have Been A Muslim For 38 Years, And I Know Islam Well” — Asari Dokubo Fires Back At Gumi

Niger Delta activist and Kalabari chieftain Asari Dokubo has responded to controversial remarks by Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, stressing his extensive knowledge and long-standing practice of Islam. Speaking in a video shared on Facebook, Dokubo rejected suggestions that he is uninformed about his faith.

“I have been a Muslim for 38 years, and I know Islam well,” Dokubo declared, emphasizing that his experience grants him authority to speak on religious and ethical matters. He criticized Gumi for using religion to make statements that could mislead the public or serve sectarian interests.

Dokubo accused the cleric of promoting rhetoric that divides Nigerians and condones wrongdoing under the guise of religious guidance. He reminded the public that Islam fundamentally advocates justice, fairness, and peace, saying, “Being a Muslim does not mean supporting wrongdoers. Islam teaches truth and righteousness.”

He also warned that divisive messaging from influential figures could threaten national unity. Dokubo urged Muslims to uphold the genuine values of Islam, including empathy, respect, and tolerance. His remarks have sparked nationwide discussion, with some praising his courage and others calling for reconciliation and cohesion within the Muslim community.
