Former PDP Deputy National Chairman Chief Bode George has stressed the importance of religious tolerance in Nigeria, recalling his personal experience supporting his late sister’s Muslim faith. Speaking on a television programme on Thursday, George highlighted the enduring impact of colonial-era policies on tribalism and religious division in the country.
Chief George explained that British colonial administrators deliberately introduced measures to separate Nigerians along ethnic and religious lines to maintain control. He argued that these divisions have persisted over decades, influencing politics, social interactions, and community cohesion.
“The issues of tribalism and religious intolerance are deep-rooted challenges that must be addressed if Nigeria is to achieve lasting peace and progress,” he said. He emphasized that Nigeria’s diversity—its multiple ethnic groups, cultures, and religions—should be seen as a source of strength, not conflict.
Illustrating his commitment to religious coexistence, George shared his personal experience with his family. “In my family, my older sister was a Muslim till she passed on. She wanted to go to Hajj, I sent her there. She came back and wanted to attend Quranic school, I sponsored her. When they were going to build a mosque near her house, I participated. She was a full-fledged Muslim,” he said, underlining his belief in mutual respect across faiths.
Chief George called on Nigerians to learn from history and embrace unity, tolerance, and understanding to build a peaceful and progressive nation. He highlighted the example of Nigeria’s founding fathers, who worked together despite different backgrounds to achieve independence and national development.
