Public affairs commentator Dr. Marindoti has weighed in on the recent confrontation between FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and Naval Officer A.M. Yerima, urging Nigerians to consider the constitutional implications of the incident. Speaking on TVC News, he stressed that the military must remain loyal to the constitution and the Nigerian people, not private interests.
According to Dr. Marindoti, Yerima’s conduct appeared to exceed his official authority. “He was employed by the Nigerian Government and shouldn’t be carrying out the private need of a man,” he said. The commentator emphasized that military officers must remember their allegiance lies with the state, not any individual, regardless of rank or influence.
While clarifying that he is “not a fan of Nyesom Wike,” Dr. Marindoti praised the minister’s stance in this case. “What I saw was Wike standing in defense of a constitutional republic that is a democracy, that has a rule of law, and the military man standing there in his own capacity as the law because he believes he has the power,” he explained. He urged the public to move beyond political bias and understand the broader democratic principles at stake.
Dr. Marindoti noted that only President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as Commander-in-Chief, has the authority to deploy military personnel. “There’s only one person that has the authority to deploy military for whatever purpose it is, and that is President Bola Ahmed Tinubu,” he stated, adding that President Tinubu likely did not authorize Yerima’s actions.
Condemning repeated instances of military overreach, he reminded officers that “no military officer should obey an illegal order” and called for renewed respect for democratic institutions. He also criticized those defending Yerima, labeling them as “useful idiots” who “are not thinking well because they don’t like Wike.”
