Lere Olayinka, advisor to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, has called on military personnel to exercise judgment when following orders, amid the recent property dispute involving naval officer A.M. Yerima. Speaking on Channels Television, Olayinka emphasized that obedience to superiors should not override ethics, legality, or common sense.
Using a striking illustration, Olayinka highlighted that not all directives from commanding officers are lawful or morally acceptable. “If I’m a military officer, and my boss gives me an order to commit a serious offense, will I obey it just because it’s from my superior?” he asked, stressing that personnel must discern when a command breaches ethical or statutory boundaries.
He criticized actions by some military personnel during the Abuja property conflict, noting that officers are employed to safeguard public interest, not to serve private or personal agendas. Olayinka said the personnel involved were protecting a building rather than performing duties aligned with their official responsibilities.
The advisor’s comments underline the importance of accountability and respect for constitutional principles in military operations, urging officers to remain loyal to the state and the law above any individual’s directive.
