Former Miss Nigeria and Big Brother Naija alum, Beauty Tukura, has shared the harrowing emotional struggle she endured after being disqualified from the reality TV show, revealing that the backlash and public criticism drove her into a deep period of depression and even thoughts of ending her life. The candid revelation came during an interview on the BeyondWithEzinne podcast, where Tukura opened up about the intense personal toll of her experience.
Reflecting on the aftermath of her disqualification, she described how the weight of public scrutiny left her feeling overwhelmed. “I was depressed, I feel like my life ended. I was living in a dark room for weeks and in between, I will do therapy,” she said, revealing the extent of her struggle to cope with the scrutiny.
Tukura also admitted that she experienced daily bouts of despair, which at times led to suicidal thoughts. “I cried every day. I was thinking of ending it. I almost actually committed suicide,” she confessed, giving a rare glimpse into the emotional pain public figures can face under intense media and social media attention.
The pressure from viewers and online critics, she explained, compounded her sense of hopelessness. “The heat was too much, and personally, I felt like nothing I said was going to make sense because all they wanted to do was crucify me like Jesus. It was very hard,” Tukura said, capturing the weight of judgment she felt from the public during that period.
In addition to the public scrutiny, facing her parents after her disqualification was a major emotional hurdle. She revealed that feelings of shame and fear of disappointing her family left her struggling to maintain composure. “I was too ashamed to see them. I didn’t know how to face them. I was in a very bad place,” she admitted, emphasizing the isolation she felt during those dark weeks.
Despite the challenges, Tukura credited her eventual recovery to the unwavering support of her parents and the encouraging messages she received from fans worldwide. These gestures of kindness and solidarity helped her shift focus from negativity to positivity. “I decided to focus on the love. Since then, I’ve always focused on the positive messages,” she said, highlighting the importance of surrounding oneself with supportive people during moments of vulnerability.
Tukura also reflected on the lessons learned from the experience, describing it as a turning point in her life. She explained that the ordeal strengthened her resolve and taught her to avoid similar pitfalls in the future. “That was the lowest point of my life, and I’ve decided it will stay that way. There’s no room for such mistakes anymore,” she stated.
By speaking openly about her mental health struggles and near-suicidal thoughts, Tukura has shed light on the often-overlooked emotional toll reality TV and public scrutiny can have on contestants. Her honesty underscores the need for greater awareness and support for mental health, particularly for public figures navigating the pressures of social media and fame.
Tukura’s candid discussion serves as a powerful reminder of the human side of public life and the resilience required to overcome such personal challenges.
