Falana Slams Military for Blocking Wike from Inspecting Abuja Land

Senior Advocate of Nigeria and human rights lawyer Femi Falana has condemned the actions of military personnel who allegedly stopped FCT Minister Nyesom Wike from inspecting a disputed property in Abuja. The incident, which occurred earlier in the week and was captured in circulating videos, has stirred national debate over the limits of military and ministerial authority.

Falana explained that under the Land Use Act, ministers and governors are legally empowered to access and inspect land within their jurisdictions. He stated that blocking the minister from carrying out this statutory duty amounted to an overreach by the officer involved.

The rights advocate added that disputes over land ownership should be addressed through proper legal channels—such as petitions or court processes—rather than through confrontation or obstruction. He also noted that uniformed officers do not possess automatic superiority over civilians, even as he cautioned Wike against using harsh language during the exchange.

Falana used the incident to highlight the need for improved civic understanding and stronger respect for the law. He urged Nigerians to uphold due process and ensure that both public officials and security agencies remain accountable for their actions.
