I Read What One Former COAS Wrote, He Cannot Tell Me Of Decency And He Can’t Teach Me–Wike

Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike has defended his actions during the recent confrontation with naval officers in Abuja, insisting that the incident has been widely misrepresented. Speaking at his residence in Life Camp on Thursday, November 13, 2025, the minister said reports circulating about the encounter did not reflect the true sequence of events, according to The Nation.

Wike dismissed the comments made by former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Yusuf Buratai (rtd), who suggested that the minister’s conduct threatened national security and undermined the authority of President Bola Tinubu. He described the remarks as unfounded, stressing that Buratai had no grounds to demand an apology on behalf of the officer involved.

The minister maintained that the land dispute at Gaduwa District—linked to property previously associated with former Naval Chief of Staff Vice Admiral Awwal Gambo—was already deemed irregular by the FCT Administration. He said the naval officer acted outside legal procedure, adding that enforcing claims on land declared invalid by authorities violates the rule of law.

Wike insisted that officials must operate strictly within established legal frameworks and cautioned against attempts to politicize the confrontation. He restated his commitment to ensuring that all land matters in the Federal Capital Territory follow due process.

Responding to criticisms from Buratai, the minister said he would not accept lessons on decency from the former army chief, recalling previous political disagreements but emphasizing that his focus remains on upholding lawful administration in the FCT.
