Former Chief of Staff Lucky Irabor has criticised remarks made by a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) regarding the recent altercation between FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and Naval Officer Lt. A.M. Yerima during a land enforcement operation in Abuja. Speaking on the SYMFONI TV programme, Irabor said the SAN’s interpretation of the incident downplayed the constitutional weight of the military uniform.
Irabor stressed that a military uniform is not a personal outfit but a representation of the state’s authority and sovereignty. He warned that portraying a uniformed officer’s actions as merely personal or political reflects what he called a “dangerous misunderstanding” of the institution the officer represents.
The former Chief of Staff argued that Lt. Yerima acted within the moral expectations of his duty when he questioned the legality of the demolition exercise on the disputed land, which has been linked to a former Chief of Defence Staff. He described any attempt to portray the officer as insubordinate as “misguided and unbecoming” of a senior legal professional.
The confrontation, which followed the FCT administration’s order to demolish structures on the property, has generated nationwide debate. While some Nigerians support Wike’s stance on enforcing planning regulations, others believe the naval officer was defending what he understood to be military-related property.
Irabor urged both civil authorities and the military to avoid escalating tensions, emphasising that disagreements should be handled through established constitutional and administrative channels. He concluded that maintaining respect for institutions, clarifying land ownership, and promoting inter-agency cooperation should be the priority.
