Any day I wake up and they didn’t call my name, I know something is wrong somewhere-Wike

Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike has once again underscored his bold, self-assured political persona, declaring that any day he wakes up and his name is not being talked about is a cause for concern. Speaking to the press, Wike suggested that being the subject of national attention—whether praise or criticism—is a sign that he is making meaningful contributions.

According to Channels TV, Wike stated, “Any day I wake up and they didn’t call my name, I know something is wrong somewhere.” For the minister, relevance in public service is inseparable from scrutiny. He explained that leaders who seek to effect change must be ready to face public reactions, resistance, and even attacks. Silence, in his view, signals stagnation rather than peace.

Wike has built a reputation as a high-visibility political figure. From his time as Rivers State governor to his current role overseeing the FCT, he has remained a prominent actor in national discourse, frequently challenging opponents, questioning institutions, and driving policies with decisiveness. His remark reflects a belief that leadership involves confronting entrenched interests and disrupting old patterns.

Supporters see Wike’s confidence as a sign of accountability and engagement, highlighting that his presence in public discourse shows active governance rather than passivity. Critics, however, argue that his confrontational style can overshadow achievements and occasionally escalate conflicts that might be handled more diplomatically.

Whether lauded or criticised, Wike’s point remains clear: for him, being noticed—by friends or foes—is preferable to irrelevance.
