Deyemi Okanlawon Under Fire for Mocking ‘Unskilled’ Actors

Nollywood actor, Deyemi Okanlawon, has come under heavy criticism on social media after making a controversial remark that many fans interpreted as a direct mockery of less experienced actors in the industry.

The actor, who is known for his outspoken personality, sparked outrage after posting, “Involve me, involve me… but you no sabi act!” a statement that many saw as a jab aimed at upcoming or unskilled colleagues.

The post immediately went viral, generating mixed reactions and igniting a heated debate within the Nollywood community.

While some agreed with Deyemi’s comment, interpreting it as a call for professionalism and higher standards, a large number of social media users accused him of pride, insensitivity, and hypocrisy.

Critics quickly flooded X (formerly Twitter) and Instagram to express their displeasure. One user wrote, “You shouldn’t be the one tweeting this sha,” implying that the actor lacked the moral standing to lecture others.

Another critic added, “Nothing special about acting though, even you no sabi act…” The backlash continued with comments such as, “I don’t think I’ve seen any of your movies that I liked your acting,” as some fans challenged Deyemi’s own talent and career achievements.

This is not the first time Deyemi has made headlines for controversial statements. Earlier in the year, he stirred debate after claiming entertainers will only begin to respect the Nigerian currency when corrupt politicians face real consequences.

His latest remark, however, appears to have struck a nerve within the entertainment industry, especially among young actors who feel dismissed and belittled by more established stars.

Despite the criticism, some fans rose to his defence, arguing that his statement was taken out of context. Supporters insisted that Deyemi was merely pointing out a recurring issue in Nollywood actors seeking roles or collaborations despite lacking the necessary training or skill. They claimed his message was aimed at encouraging professionalism, not insulting anyone.

According to them, the industry needs more honest conversations about improving acting standards, not silent approval. Another user wrote, “Deyemi is right. Nollywood needs structure, and people should be ready before they demand roles.”

Still, the backlash continued to trend, highlighting the tension between established stars and emerging actors in the industry.

Many observers note that the younger generation is becoming increasingly vocal about gatekeeping and condescending attitudes from veterans, while older actors insist on preserving standard and discipline.

Deyemi himself has not issued any follow-up clarification, leaving fans divided over the intent behind his message. Whether it was a harmless joke, industry commentary, or an indirect shade remains unclear.

As the conversation continues, one thing is certain the Nollywood community is paying attention. The incident has reopened broader discussions about mentorship, training, authenticity, and the responsibility of public figures to communicate sensitively in an industry with diverse talents and varying levels of experience.
