Ace Nigerian rapper, Olamide, has declared that Grammy-winning singer, Wizkid, stands as the greatest Afrobeats artist after the late music legend and pioneer, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.
Olamide made the statement while speaking at a press conference in Canada, where he also reflected on his long-running musical relationship with the Starboy hitmaker.
The YBNL founder, popularly known as Baddo, described his collaborations with Wizkid as blessings in his career, noting that their partnership has always been built on genuine musical chemistry rather than influence or industry advantage.
“I am blessed to have collaborated with Wizkid on multiple occasions. You know Wizkid is the greatest Afrobeats artist ever after Fela,” he said.
Olamide explained that beyond their individual strengths, what continues to make their joint projects successful is the harmony they share in the studio.
According to him, Wizkid’s talent, global impact and consistency have earned him a place as one of the most exceptional music acts to come out of Africa.
His declaration has sparked a storm of reactions across social media, with fans of the genre revisiting the long-standing debate over who deserves the title of “greatest” in modern Afrobeats.
The conversation has also reignited comparisons among Nigeria’s three biggest global stars Wizkid, Davido and Burna Boy.
Olamide’s statement comes weeks after Burna Boy described himself as the greatest African artist after Fela, a claim that also stirred heated arguments online. Similarly, Davido has repeatedly referred to himself as the “King of Afrobeats,” a title he insists reflects his dominance and influence in the industry.
Fans of all three artistes have since taken to X, Instagram and TikTok to defend their favourites, sharing streaming achievements, international awards, cultural impact, and industry longevity as evidence.
While Wizkid FC celebrated Olamide’s remarks as validation of their long-held belief, supporters of Davido and Burna Boy strongly disagreed, insisting their stars hold the true crown.
Industry observers say Olamide’s voice adds weight to the ongoing debate, given his status as one of the most influential artists in the country and a veteran with over a decade of chart-topping hits.
The rapper has previously spoken about the importance of unity and growth within the industry, and many analysts believe his comments are more reflective of admiration than competition.
Despite the heated online reactions, Olamide’s statement has also been interpreted by some fans as a tribute to the evolution of Afrobeats from Fela’s revolutionary sound to the global dominance currently displayed by artists like Wizkid. Others argue that the constant debate over “who is number one” shows just how far Nigerian music has come on the world stage.
As conversations around greatness continue to trend, Olamide maintains that his respect for Wizkid is built on shared history, mutual understanding and years of groundbreaking collaborations that have shaped modern Afrobeats.
