Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has offered a candid reflection on prison life in the wake of IPOB leader Nnamdi Kanu’s life imprisonment, drawing on his own experiences as a former detainee during Nigeria’s military era.
In a post on his verified Twitter account, Sani shared advice for navigating the challenges of incarceration. “The first rule of the prison life is that the moment you enter, be humble and make peace with the Lords inside; that guarantees your safety, and regularly pay your tax to the inside Gofment. If you go there with a degree in stubbornness, you will meet professors inside. If you become ‘loyal’, you’ll make good friends; but don’t be too weak because you’ll still have violent haters. That was the rule during our time,” he wrote.
Sani explained that humility and diplomacy are essential for survival in prison. His advice highlights the need for tact, resilience, and careful observation of internal hierarchies in correctional facilities, offering a satirical yet serious perspective on life behind bars.
