The Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle, says security agencies are making significant progress in the mission to rescue the schoolgirls abducted in Kebbi State. His update comes amid growing national concern over the incident and ongoing operations to locate the students.
The girls were kidnapped from Government Girls’ Comprehensive Secondary School, Maga, during an attack by armed bandits on Monday, November 17. President Bola Tinubu subsequently instructed Minister Matawalle to travel to Kebbi State to directly coordinate and oversee the rescue efforts.
Matawalle has since been working with military and police teams, reviewing intelligence reports, and ensuring that security resources are deployed strategically. According to him, current intelligence indicates that security personnel are closing in on the location of the abducted students.
He explained that the operation relies on a combination of technology, human intelligence, and detailed tracking of bandit movements. Local authorities, community leaders, and security teams are also collaborating to gather actionable information and prevent further incidents in surrounding villages and forests.
While addressing reporters in Birnin Kebbi, Matawalle reassured Nigerians of the government’s commitment, saying, “The intelligence we have shows that we are almost close to those children.” He added that all necessary measures are being taken to ensure the girls return safely to their families.
