The Coalition of South East Youth Leaders (COSEYL) has rejected the Federal Government’s decision to move Nnamdi Kanu to the Sokoto State Correctional Center, warning that the transfer could endanger his life. Their concerns come shortly after Kanu was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Federal High Court in Abuja.
Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), was relocated to Sokoto following Thursday’s judgement. However, COSEYL President General Goodluck Ibem said in a statement that the security environment in Sokoto and nearby states remains volatile due to persistent threats from bandits, Boko Haram, ISWAP, and other insurgent groups.
Ibem noted that the region has recorded repeated attacks targeting both civilians and security personnel, arguing that placing Kanu in such an environment exposes him to unnecessary risk. He emphasized that safeguarding the life of any high-profile inmate is essential for national security and public trust.
The coalition urged the Federal Government to reconsider the transfer and relocate Kanu to Abuja or another secure facility where security structures are stronger. They also called for a transparent assessment of potential risks before making further decisions on his custody.
COSEYL maintained that while the judicial process must be respected, ensuring the safety of all inmates is a constitutional obligation that should not be compromised.
