In Nig, The Loss of Five Lives Hardly Makes Headlines — Nathaniel Decries Normalisation Of Violence

Public commentator Nathaniel Awuapila has expressed deep concern over what he describes as Nigeria’s growing desensitisation to violence. In a video shared on TrustTV News, he said the country has reached a troubling point where the loss of a few lives no longer sparks national outrage unless the casualty figures rise into shocking triple digits.

Awuapila noted that Nigeria appears to be drifting into a state where human life is undervalued, with both citizens and authorities reacting strongly only after large-scale massacres. He stressed that in any functional society, the killing of even one person should trigger nationwide concern, investigations, and preventive action.

According to him, the frequency of attacks, kidnappings, and killings has contributed to a dangerous numbness in public perception. Reports of five deaths, he said, are now treated as minor incidents, overshadowed by the country’s recurring cycles of violent tragedies.

Awuapila warned that this mindset weakens national resolve and undermines efforts to tackle insecurity, as urgency only rises after catastrophic incidents involving dozens or hundreds of victims. He urged government agencies, the media, and civil society groups to restore the value of human life by treating every violent incident—no matter the scale—with seriousness and urgency.
