The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) of the Nigerian Armed Forces has dismissed a circulating video alleging that youths would be forcibly recruited into the military from age 18, calling it “fake” and misleading.
In a statement posted on its verified X (formerly Twitter) account on Saturday, 22 November 2025, the DHQ clarified that the footage wrongly attributed comments to the Chief of Defence Staff, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede. The military explained that the video uses a digitally cloned image and voice, highlighting the misuse of artificial intelligence (AI) technology to spread disinformation.
The Armed Forces warned that such fabricated content could damage its reputation and create unnecessary fear among Nigerians. The statement stressed that neither the Chief of Defence Staff, any Service Chief, nor any authorised military personnel have ever directed or suggested compulsory recruitment of youths. “For the avoidance of doubt, the purported statement was never made by the Chief of Defence Staff, any of the Service Chiefs, or any member of the Armed Forces of Nigeria,” the DHQ noted.
Officials also cautioned citizens about the dangers of AI-generated deepfakes, urging extreme care before creating, sharing, or believing unverified content. The DHQ emphasised that these forms of disinformation undermine public trust in national institutions and could escalate tensions unnecessarily.
