In a recent interview shared on Sunday, November 23, 2025, Primate Elijah Ayodele criticized the Nigerian government’s handling of individuals linked to banditry, raising concerns about selective enforcement and its impact on national security.
Ayodele specifically questioned why the government appears to shield Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, stating, “Why is the government protecting him? If it were an ordinary person, they would have taken him.” He argued that Gumi’s frequent negotiations and interactions with armed groups should warrant government scrutiny, emphasizing that no citizen should be exempt from questioning when national security is at stake.
The cleric further highlighted that Nigeria’s worsening security situation is partly due to authorities ignoring warnings and failing to act on individuals who could provide critical intelligence. He insisted that consistent transparency and accountability are essential to maintain public trust and curb criminal activities.
Ayodele urged the federal government to adopt a more even-handed and firm approach in handling people connected—directly or indirectly—to insecurity. He stressed that addressing these disparities is crucial to prevent the emboldening of criminal networks and to reassure citizens of the government’s commitment to justice.
