Parents across Nigeria were thrown into confusion and emotional distress after the Federal Government ordered the immediate closure of 47 Federal Unity Colleges due to rising security threats. Many families who expected a normal visiting day instead found themselves rushing to retrieve their children without notice.
The directive, issued by the Federal Ministry of Education on November 21, 2025, followed the recent abduction of more than 300 students and teachers in Niger State. Authorities say the temporary shutdown is a precautionary step to prevent further attacks on schools amid growing nationwide concerns.
For parents like Stella Shaibu, the announcement was both abrupt and unsettling. She explained that she had been preparing food at home in anticipation of visiting her daughter when she received an unexpected call advising parents to come for their children. At first, she doubted the information until school officials confirmed that a notice had been sent out the previous night.
Shaibu described the experience as emotionally draining, noting how quickly their routine plans turned into an emergency pickup. Many other parents shared similar experiences as they arrived at various unity schools to collect their children, unsure of what the coming days might hold.
