Mukami, a woman from Meru, has shared the traumatic experience of surviving domestic violence while raising two children. Her story highlights the challenges faced by women in abusive relationships and the importance of seeking help.
Mukami explained that she grew up in Meru and lost her father while in form two, which forced her to drop out of school due to financial difficulties. She later moved to Thika, where she worked as a househelp and eventually met her future husband through Facebook. They dated for six months before moving in together in the village and were blessed with two children.
According to Mukami, her husband developed a habit of drinking heavily and sometimes sold household items to fund his alcohol. When she confronted him, he became physically abusive. One night, he returned home drunk with his mistress, demanded she prepare food, and violently assaulted her when she asked for money. He even threw her clothes outside, forcing her to leave the house with her children.
On her way, Mukami encountered three armed men in a nearby tea plantation. Initially frightened, she explained her situation to them. Surprisingly, the men, despite admitting they were involved in criminal activities, chose to escort her safely back home and encouraged her to remain prayerful, saying that God had protected her that night.
Mukami’s story sheds light on the resilience required to navigate abusive relationships and the unpredictable ways help and protection can appear.
