Tinubu Government Says It’ll Never Forgive Peter Obi For Backing Trump’s Military Action In Nigeria

The Presidency under President Bola Tinubu has strongly criticized former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi for supporting what it described as a “foreign invasion” of Nigeria. The controversy stems from Obi’s remarks regarding former U.S. President Donald Trump’s threat to deploy American military forces to combat terrorism in the country.

Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to President Tinubu on Information and Strategy, expressed the administration’s stance on X (formerly Twitter), stating: “We shall never forget and forgive Peter Obi for supporting a foreign invasion of Nigeria.” The statement underscores the government’s opposition to any external military intervention, highlighting Nigeria’s commitment to sovereignty.

Obi had earlier commented on the country’s worsening security situation, criticizing the government for allegedly downplaying the killings of Christians. He urged international attention to protect lives and reduce poverty, framing his remarks as a humanitarian concern. Obi also emphasized the importance of education and healthcare in preventing future security threats, warning that children denied schooling could become vulnerable to extremist recruitment.

The row intensified after the U.S. designated Nigeria a “Country of Particular Concern (CPC)” on October 31, 2025, citing ongoing persecution of Christians. Trump warned that failure to tackle insecurity could result in withdrawal of aid and possible deployment of U.S. forces against terrorist groups targeting Christians.

In response, the Nigerian Presidency confirmed that President Tinubu would engage in discussions with Trump, signaling the administration’s intent to address international concerns while maintaining national sovereignty. The situation has sparked nationwide debates on the role of foreign involvement in domestic security and the political implications of Obi’s public comments.
