Former Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly, Gabriel Dewan, has raised fresh concerns about what he described as a growing pattern of religiously–motivated attacks in parts of the country. Dewan said that in his own community, during one of the terrorist invasions, several Christians who ran to seek refuge in the house of a Muslim Imam were rescued and protected from harm. According to him, this single incident reflects the severity of the crisis and exposes the extent of the violence they have witnessed over the years.
Speaking in a video interview posted by Channels TV, Dewan insisted that the recurring attacks clearly point toward what he called a “Christian genocide.” He explained that the situation where Christians had to flee into a mosque for safety, and were shielded by a Muslim cleric, shows how desperate and terrifying the circumstances have become.
In his words:
“You have to agree that there is a Christian genocide because, in some instances in my own state, the terrorists came and some of our Christian brothers were saved by a Muslim Imam. When you look at that kind of scenario, it gives a clear reason to believe that what is happening is indeed religiously motivated. The Christians ran into the mosque, and instead of being harmed, they were protected by the Imam. That alone shows the depth of the crisis and why many of us believe it is a form of religious genocide.”
