If You Call Herdsmen For Peace They Come With Guns For Many Reasons,Can You Call IPOB For Peace–Gumi

Prominent Islamic scholar Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has called on the Nigerian government to adopt non-violent strategies in addressing insecurity linked to armed herders in the northern region.

In a report by Channels Television on Tuesday, November 25, 2025, Gumi stated that many armed herders are willing to surrender their weapons if approached through dialogue. He explained that while herders often arrive at peace meetings armed—for reasons ranging from self-protection to mistrust—they have consistently expressed a desire for peaceful resolution.

Gumi criticized authorities for frequently relying on force, emphasizing that negotiation is a more effective approach in many cases. He contrasted the situation with other militant groups, noting that dialogue is far more feasible with herders than with organisations such as IPOB or Boko Haram.

“The Fulani herdsmen have been asking for peace. When you invite them, they come with their guns for various reasons. But can you invite IPOB for peace? Can you invite Boko Haram?” Gumi said, highlighting the unique dynamics of engaging armed herders.
