president Bola Tinubu has asked the Senate to confirm three nominees as non-career ambassadors, marking a significant step nearly two years after all Nigerian envoys were recalled in September 2023. The request was conveyed in a letter read on Wednesday by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
According to the letter, the nominations comply with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution, particularly Section 171, which empowers the President to appoint ambassadors subject to Senate approval. Tinubu urged lawmakers to consider and confirm the nominees without delay, given the importance of the postings.
The nominees are Kayode Are (Ogun State), Aminu Dalhatu (Jigawa State), and Ayodele Oke (Oyo State). The Senate has referred the list to its Committee on Foreign Affairs for screening, with a directive to submit its report within one week. This accelerated timeline signals the administration’s intention to quickly fill these high-profile diplomatic positions.
A statement from the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, revealed that the nominees are being considered for ambassadorial roles in the United States, the United Kingdom, and France—three of Nigeria’s most strategic foreign missions. Onanuga also highlighted the nominees’ extensive backgrounds in diplomacy, intelligence, and national security.
Ambassador Amin Mohammed Dalhatu previously served as Nigeria’s envoy to South Korea. Ambassador Ayodele Oke, a former Director General of the NIA, has represented Nigeria at the Commonwealth in London. Retired Colonel Lateef Kayode Are is a former Director General of the SSS and once served as National Security Adviser.
