the Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) has raised strong concerns over what it describes as escalating misinformation aimed at destabilising Northern Nigeria. The group said recent patterns of violence and international reactions suggest a coordinated attempt—both internal and external—to misrepresent the security challenges in the region.
In a statement released by its National Coordinator, Comrade Jamilu Aliyu Charanchi, CNG noted that foreign narratives portraying events in Plateau and Benue as genocide ignore higher casualty figures recorded in states such as Katsina, Zamfara, Kaduna, Kebbi, and Borno. Charanchi expressed particular worry that former U.S. President Donald Trump appears to have relied on “false information not supported by the CIA, FBI, or the U.S. Embassy in Nigeria.” He added that Trump’s special envoy for Arab and African Affairs, Massad Boulos, had already dismissed the genocide claims as misleading.
CNG argued that the timing of renewed attacks across the North suggests a deliberate effort to reinforce these narratives and trigger international pressure on Nigeria. The group said ongoing incidents—including attacks on churches, kidnappings in Kwara, Kebbi, Niger, and Zamfara, and the killing of a brigadier general—show signs of political orchestration rather than random criminality. It maintained that such violence must not be exploited for foreign, local, or separatist political agendas.
The coalition also condemned the spread of misinformation, citing a viral video in which IPOB members allegedly disguised themselves as Hausa/Fulani attackers to provoke ethnic division. It stressed that Nigeria must confront both the violence and the propaganda fueling national tension. Additionally, CNG criticised the closure of 47 Federal Government Unity Schools and several others in Northern states, warning that these shutdowns deepen educational setbacks in a region that already has the highest number of out-of-school children.
CNG urged the Federal Government to expose and prosecute individuals—local or foreign—responsible for spreading destabilising falsehoods.
