A 13-Year-Old Girl Was Graped Because Those Meant to Protect Her Did Nothing — Senate Reopens Case

For seven years, Ochanya Abaji suffered in silence, living a nightmare while those around her failed to act.

Sent to live with her maternal aunt for a better education, the girl was allegedly raped repeatedly from the age of six by her uncle, Andrew Abaji, and his son, Victor Abaji. The abuse caused severe medical complications, including VVF (vaginal fistula) and urinary incontinence, confirmed by doctors at Benue State University Teaching Hospital.

Her family sought justice in the High Court, but the case was dismissed. Shockingly, the Benue State government refused to appeal, leaving Oana’s family without legal recourse.

Now, the Senate has intervened. Senator Natasha Daha presented the petition on Oana’s behalf, and the case has been referred to the Senate Committee on Ethics, Code of Conduct, and Public Petitions, tasked to report back within four weeks.

Senator Lola Shiru described the details as “horrific” and stressed the need to determine if a miscarriage of justice occurred. The committee will advise on the appropriate next steps, including whether the state government should appeal.

This tragedy is a stark warning: when those meant to protect children fail, the consequences are catastrophic. Oana’s story demands justice, and her voice must finally be heard.
