Chief Okemiri Alex, President-General of the Igbo Political Network, has expressed concern over what he described as the reluctance of certain South-East leaders to support the release of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). Speaking to Punch on Wednesday, November 26, 2027, Chief Okemiri claimed that some politicians are deliberately obstructing efforts to secure Kanu’s freedom.
According to Chief Okemiri, the lack of advocacy by these leaders signals a limited commitment to justice for the Igbo people. He argued that rather than promoting the cause of regional unity and fairness, some influential figures in the South-East are reportedly discouraging President Bola Tinubu from considering Kanu’s release, citing fears that it could trigger unrest—a claim he described as false and self-serving.
He suggested that the primary motivation behind this stance is personal gain. Chief Okemiri accused certain politicians and businessmen of prioritizing the protection of their wealth, privileges, and business interests, such as oil well licenses and property holdings, over the welfare of their constituents. “These individuals are more concerned with safeguarding their assets than with advancing the cause of justice or the rights of the Igbo people,” he said.
Commenting further, Chief Okemiri said, “Some political officeholders from the South-East are discouraging the President from releasing him, claiming he will cause war, which is not true. These individuals are sycophants, ‘men with double-edged swords.’”
